Wildlife of the East India Zone

 

The two most important wildlife sanctuaries in East India are the Sundarbans and the Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary. The Sunderbans National Park has shown a constant rise in its tiger population right from the time it was declared a Tiger Reserve in the year 1973.

According to a recent tourism department survey, the total count of tiger in the forests of Sunderbans is 287. The Manas Tiger Reserve, located in the foothills of the Himalayas and the Sunderbans National Park, spreading over 54 islands are known for their abundant and rare flora and fauna.

The Kaziranga National Park in the state of Assam has the eminence of being one of the last refuges of the Indian one-horned rhino. One can also observe endangered wildlife species of the world here like the One-horned Rhinoceros, Wild Buffalos, Hispid Hare and Pigmy Hog. Rich with natural beauty and varied topography, East India is home to several animals and birds.
