The name of Bhopal’s Habibganj railway station has been changed to Rani Kamlapati station. The BJP government of Madhya Pradesh proposed this to the Centre last week, which gave the clearance without any delay.  Rani Kamalapati was the widow of Gond ruler, Nizam Shah, the chief of Ginnorgarh, who had built the seven-storey Kamalapati Palace. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the redeveloped Rani Kamalapati Railway Station during his visit to Madhya Pradesh.

It is located in Habibganj, New Bhopal and lies on the main Jhansi–Bhopal–Itarsi route line. It is India's first private railway station. Who was queen Kamlapati?
Rani Kamlapati was the widow of Nizam Shah, whose Gond dynasty ruled the then Ginnorgarh, 55 km from Bhopal, in the 18th century. Nizam Shah built the famous seven-storeyed Kamlapati Palace in her name in Bhopal. According to the state government, Kampalati is known to have shown great bravery in facing aggressors during her reign after her husband was killed. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has claimed that Kamlapati was the “last Hindu queen of Bhopal”, who did great work in the area of water management and set up parks and temples. The Gond are one of the largest tribal communities in India, spread across Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar and Odisha. The renamed and redeveloped railway station is being inaugurated on November 15, the birth anniversary of the iconic 19th century tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda.

Changing of railway station names is not new. There are times when state governments decide to go for a name change to represent long-standing popular demand or history, or as part of a political project pushing for a wider iconography.

Facilities of Rani Kamlapati Railway Station:
The Rani Kamlapati Railway Station is located in Bhopal city in the state of Madhya Pradesh, which is also a part of the West Central Railway. The railway station is completely based in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode with green building and world-class amenities that has ease of mobility for disabled persons. It also has a hub of integrated multi-modal transport and has international airport facilities like a cafeteria food plaza along with a food court and an air-conditioned waiting lounge.

Lifts, escalators, and a sitting arrangement of 700 to 1100 passengers are built in an open concourse. Display boards of various languages have been installed to inform the passengers regarding the movement of trains. There are around 160 CCTV cameras present with round-the-clock surveillance. An additional information lounge is set up with a large LED screen on the first floor waiting room to share information on the tourism and culture of the state.

There is also literature based on tourism and culture, leaflets, brochures, coffee table books that are made available for the people present at the station. The station has got a 5-star rating in GEM Sustainability certification by the ASSOCHAM for Green, sustainable design, and eco-friendly project.

Rani Kamalapati station’s redevelopment project under PPP mode has set up benchmark and learning model for other railway stations. Reconstructed on the lines of Germany’s Heidelberg railway station Rani Kamalapati railway station is India’s first world-class station.

The station has been designed and built with the ultra-modern amenities like large covered parking area, 24X7 power backup, drinking water, air-conditioned lobby, offices, shops, high speed escalator, lift, anchor stores, automobile showrooms, convention centre, hotels, super specialty hospital, etc. to provide passengers the airport-like feel & comfort at the same time.

The redeveloped railway station has received GEM 5 star rating in GEM Sustainability Certification by ASSOCHAM for Green, sustainable design and eco-friendly project. The GEM Sustainability Certification aims to promote eco-friendly green building design and development. Rani Kamalapati Railway station is the first ever Green Station that has planned an extensive reuse of water with Zero discharge technology that has been put into place for sewage systems. Approximately 6800 sqm is identified for soft land scaping and 7300 sqm for hard land scaping. Also, to ensure cleaner energy from renewable and non-conventional energy, provisions for solar energy generation is provided in station. There is also an adequate provision of rainwater harvesting at identified locations.
